Dr Lee Yin Yee, SBS, BBS, MH, Founder of Xinyi Family, is an accomplished industrialist, entrepreneur and a prominent philanthropist, who loves his country and Hong Kong.

Dr Lee is a shrewd, hardworking and pragmatic industrialist. With great insight and vision, he saw a major business opportunity – there were no automobile glass manufacturers in Shenzhen at one time and glass had to be imported from overseas. Thus, in 1988, he decided to set up Xinyi Glass in Shenzhen to manufacture glass.

Led by Dr Lee, and with perseverance and hard work, Xinyi Glass was able to gradually growth its business. In February 2005, Xinyi Glass was listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. In close to four decades, Xinyi Group has developed into a world leading integrated glass manufacturer, focusing on producing high-quality float glass, automobile glass, energy-saving architectural glass, among others. Eventually, Xinyi Glass spun off three companies for listing, namely Xinyi Solar, Xinyi Energy, and Xinyi Electric Storage. Among them, both Xinyi Glass and Xinyi Solar were included as constituent stocks of the Hang Seng Index, forming the “Xinyi Corporate Empire”. Xinyi Family has become a world-leading integrated glass manufacturer and new energy sector pioneer, the world’s largest float glass manufacturer, the world’s largest photovoltaic glass manufacturer, and China’s largest private ground-mounted photovoltaic power station enterprise. Dr Lee’s dream of “China producing her own glass” came true. Boasting abundant foreign auto maker resources pooled in Hong Kong, Xinyi Glass was selling its products to more than 100 countries and regions in a few short years. In 2001, it exported more than 70% of the automobile glass it produced, leading the way of Chinese brands “going global”. Xinyi was also one of the first Hong Kong companies to respond to the national “Belt and Road Initiative”. Xinyi’s production base in Malaysia is the largest Chinese industrial investment project in the region.

While developing his business, Dr Lee takes honoring social responsibilities as a top priority, and has actively contributed technologies and strengths towards achieving global “Carbon Neutral” goals. Over the past forty years since its establishment, Xinyi has donated over RMB2.5 billion of supplies and money to charity, including building more than 80 Hopeful Schools in the country. Dr Lee is one of the earliest patriotic Hong Kong businessmen to invest in mainland China after the country’s reform and opening-up. Leveraging his connection and using his own funds, Dr Lee established a school in Shenzhen, which is the first in mainland China where qualified Hong Kong teachers can teach. After obtaining professional medical qualifications in Canada, Dr Helen Chan returned to Hong Kong and became a doctor. Serendipity brought Dr Chan to get to know more about Lingzhi and study further on Chinese medicine. Finally, Dr Chan established Vita Green business in 1993 and launched two Lingzhi products at the same year. Today, the Vita Green brand has become a time-honoured brand in the minds of Hong Kong people, and has playing a leading position among health supplement brands.

Health supplements were not as widely accepted twenty years ago. Yet, Dr Chan was enthusiastic about introducing healthcare products and traditional Chinese medicine to the general public for disease prevention and maintaining health. To realise this vision, she invested money and efforts to create the brand Vita Green to become a part of Hong Kong people's life. Vita Green has come a long way since 1993 from selling two products, Lingzhi for adults and children only, to 150 products launched so far.

Before launching her business, Dr Chan did a lot of research on Lingzhi and found that wild Lingzhi has many health benefits. Knowing that Guangxi is the home of wild Lingzhi, she reached out to local merchants to set up pharmaceutical factories, opening the door to Chinese Medicinal healthcare products.

The production is pretty streamlined now – from extracting Lingzhi in the Guangxi factory, to R&D and final production in Hong Kong. Looking back, Dr Chan described herself as an amateur when she first started, "we visited pharmaceutical factories in the United States and Hong Kong, and then tried to learn by doing. Every time I stumbled upon things I was unfamiliar with, I tried to solve them one by one. I was lucky to have help from those around me." The journey was not without challenges, but each challenge marked a milestone in Dr Chan's entrepreneurship.

The factory in Ap Lei Chau was up and ready in 1997. Unfortunately, this new venture was hit by the Financial Crisis and some internal complications five years later.  "There was pressure from the company and the bank. And my children were still young.  At these stressful times, I was very thankful for the support from my husband. My faith also helped me stay positive. I felt that if God gave me the challenge, I must have the ability to overcome it. That's how I endured all the hardship along the way." About a year later, the company was back on track.

Dr Chan studied Western medicine but to familiarise herself with Chinese herbs, she got a license in Chinese medicine and learned about pharmaceutical processes and protocols. Using her knowledge in both Western and Chinese medicine, Dr Chan developed various supplements with natural ingredients to encourage the general public to take their health into their own hands. "Everyone can live to120 years old healthily, happily, with dignity" is the vision Dr Chan has for Vita Green throughout its 30 years of operation in Hong Kong. Each product of the brand consists of carefully selected natural herbs that help fight ageing and deterioration, as well as treat and relieve illnesses without side effects. The brand has expanded its market to Asia, Europe and the United States.

Dr. Tan Siu Lin, Founder and Chairman of Luen Thai Group, is a prominent, patriotic and prestigious industrialist and philanthropist with pioneering vision that made him a rags-to-riches success story.

Dr. Tan established Luen Thai Shipping and Trading Company in 1965.  As a sagacious entrepreneur, he piloted his Hong Kong-rooted company to ride on the opportunities of Saipan’s export privilege to the US. The firm had thrived vibrantly ever since with the Hong Kong listed company, Luen Thai Holdings Ltd, that provides manufacturing and supply chain services for scores of international brands of clothing and luxury bags, with over 40,000 employees and around USD1 billion in annual revenue. Dr. Tan took a forward-looking approach to bolster the Group long before the 2005’s termination of The Agreement on Textiles and Clothing that posed challenge to his enterprise. Mr Cheung started his own business in trade of laminates in the early days of China's reform and opening-up in 1980s. He opened a plant in Liantang, Shenzhen to produce laminates in 1988 and a second plant in Longhua of the same city in 1991. Under the leadership of Mr Cheung, Kingboard kept expanding and even got listed in the Main Board of Hong Kong Stock Exchange in 1993. In 2006, Kingboard Laminates, a spin-off from Kingboard, went public, with total market value of the two companies exceeding HK$80 billion. The core business of Kingboard includes laminates, PCBs, chemical products and real estate, among which its laminate business has been ranked the first for sixteen consecutive years in the global laminate markets. Currently, Kingboard has 60 plants across the globe and nearly 40,000 employees. In the first half of 2021, Kingboard Group posted the best results since its inception with revenue of HK$26.7 billion and a sharp rise of 377% in net profit to over HK$5 billion as compared with the same period last year.

With business across the globe, Mr Cheung now has huge amount of work every day. Fortunately, he manages to handle all this with the help of his family. Mr Cheung admits that Kingboard would not have been so successful without the solidarity of his siblings. He emphasises the importance of concerted efforts as this allowed him to make an all-out effort to attain greatest achievement without worry. According to his management philosophy, a company will grow bigger and stronger only when its people are united and encouraged to speak up and when the company is open to all opinions.

Mr Cheung is also well aware of achieving sustainable development of the Group through talented management. He founded Kingboard Institute of Management in 2003 that offered comprehensive teaching courses to middle and senior managers as a way of improving their quality through systematic training. Recognised as the “King of Paper Manufacturing”, Dr Patrick Lee Wan-Keung is the founder of Lee & Man Paper Manufacturing Limited, which is listed as among the top five paper and pulp manufacturers in the world. In addition to Lee & Man Paper, Dr Lee has also established plants for cassette tapes, handbags and chemicals, all of which have performed exceptionally, thus making him the leader in all of these industries.

Dr Lee possesses tremendous foresight and is keen on capturing fresh opportunities. Back in the 70s, when China implemented its “open door” policy, Dr Lee founded a handbag plant to leverage the low production costs and ample labour in the country. Later, in the 90s, as the light industry flourished in the Pearl River Delta, it began to experience shortages of packaging paper and chemical products, which resulted in a reliance on imports. To take advantage of this shortfall, Dr Lee established paper manufacturing and chemical plants to provide quality products for domestic consumption. Yet another demonstration of his foresight is his ability to identify the public’s increasing demand for high quality tissue paper, as China’s standard of living improved. Fully mindful of such demand, Dr Lee established his first tissue paper plant to seize the emerging opportunities. 

With China having experienced advancement and reform over the past four decades; land and labour costs have risen sharply. Consequently, the light industry has generally begun migrating to Southeast Asia. Under Dr Lee’s leadership, Lee & Man Paper has again captured opportunities, this time setting up paper manufacturing plants in Vietnam and Malaysia to supply the relevant markets, and thus also lay a solid foundation for developing in Southeast Asia. Lee & Man Paper supplies recycled pulp to the China market as well, via the plants that it established in Myanmar, Indonesia and Cambodia, thereby addressing the local shortage of such raw materials.

During his career spanning nearly 40 years at ASM Pacific Technology Limited (“ASMPT”), and after taking the helm as CEO in 2007, Mr Lee Wai Kwong has been dedicating to realise his high-tech dream while spearheading the transformation of ASMPT, from a Hong Kong-based industrial company, into a leading global technology enterprise. Currently, ASMPT is the global #1 in the semiconductor assembly and packaging equipment industry and the surface mount technology (SMT) solutions market.

Mr Lee joined the ASMPT Group in Hong Kong in 1980. During his first thirty years career with ASMPT, he witnessed and took part in the successful pursue of organic growth strategy by the Group, which had brought ASMPT into a regional company and the #1 in the global semiconductor assembly and packaging equipment market since 2002. Dr Tai Tak-fung is the Founder and Chairman of Four Seas Group and responsible for the Group’s corporate and strategy planning. Riding on his business acumen and entrepreneurship, Dr Tai built up his empire and was viewed as the frontrunner in the snacks and food industry in Hong Kong.

Four Seas Group was founded by Dr Tai in 1971 specialising in food products raw material supply, production, distribution, retail, operation of chain restaurant and investment holding. Under Dr Tai’s leadership, the Group set up 19 production bases in Hong Kong and the Mainland and became one of the largest food producers in Hong Kong. Not only is the Four Seas brand well received by the local food market, it also received numerous accolades such as the Hong Kong Top Ten Brandnames Awards and the Superbrands Hong Kong. Since 2016, it was named one of Asia’s 500 Most Influential Brands by the World Brand Lab, one of the top three brand evaluation agencies.

Over the years, Dr Tai spared no effort in promoting Hong Kong’s food industry. Dr Yip Kit-chuen, founder of the GEW Corporation Limited and Chairman of GEW Holdings Limited and Shanghai GMP Electrical Appliances Company Limited, is a prominent industrialist and entrepreneur. With an acute market insight and through his sincerity, Dr Yip has built up a prosperous business and become a pioneer in the area of electrical household appliances.

Born in Shanghai in 1937, Dr Yip came to Hong Kong in 1950 and worked as an apprentice in a machine factory. Dr Yip founded GEW Machine Factory in 1961 and decided to begin his own business on production mold and tailor-made production machines. After two years, the company mainly produced electronic metal parts. Because of Dr Yip’s accumulating experiences along the way and sparing no effort in research and development, and also registering patent for his product innovation functions, GEW became both the OEM and ODM manufacturer for worldwide household appliances, and its business has been all over the world such as the US, Europe and Australia since the 1980s. Its toasters and electrical products are well-known for their excellent quality and have won several world-class quality awards. Dr Yip has turned his company into a global leading ODM manufacturer in toasters.

With his extremely sensitive market insight, Dr Yip thinks that Hong Kong entrepreneurs should have an open mind and a broad vision. He established his own brand Welhome in 1994. By virtue of his rich experience in home appliances manufacturing and innovative product design, he set up a production base in the Mainland and opened up a sales network with distribution channels and after-sales service spanning across Shanghai, Beijing, Chongqing and major cities in the Guangdong Province. In 2005, GEW entered the coffee brewer market. Under his innovative leadership, the company has developed a series of ingenious domestic and commercial coffee machine, coffee grinder and related accessories.

Apart from his business interests, Dr Yip is an enthusiastic supporter of the strategy of “revitalising the nation through science and education”, and genuinely cares about nurturing the next generation for greater benefit of the society. Not only did he establish schools and scholarship in his home town Ningbo in as early as 1994, he also set up education funds in and made contribution to universities and secondary schools in Beijing, Shanghai and Dongguan. Having affection for Hong Kong’s younger generation, Dr Yip is keen to make donation to different universities, secondary and primary schools. He has been actively involving in the Hong Kong Polytechnic University Development Foundation since 2011 and once served as its Chairman.

Mr Yeung Kin-man, who was originally from Nanhai, Foshan in Guangdong but born and bred in Hong Kong, is a typical Hong Kong rags-to-riches entrepreneur who found Biel Crystal (HK) Manufactory Ltd. From scratch in 1984 principally engaged in manufacturing watch cover glasses. Having been heavily invested in R&D and state-of-the-heart equipment, Mr Yeung successfully led his company to enter business into the high-tech optional industry by producing glass screens for electronic products. Under Yeung’s leadership, his company has become the global market leader of the glass panel. Operating out of factories in the southern Chinese cities of Shenzhen and Huizhou, Biel is currently the largest cover glass manufacturer in the world, grabbing over half of the market share with all well-known international brands as clients. In 2016, Biel Crystal ranked 68 among Guangdong Top 500 Enterprises, and 23 among Guangdong Top 100 Manufacturing Enterprises.

Thanks to Mr Yeung’s passion to innovation and technology, he built his company to a globally renowned enterprise of touchscreen glass. To remain at the cutting edge of technology, Biel Crystal allocates about 5 percent of total sales for research and development every year. He also set up a R&D division to develop new technologies to such as the fingerprint-proof touchscreen glass as well as the sapphire glass to enhance scratch resistance.

Mr Yeung understood that the traditional product market has been saturated and to remain on the leading edge, he believes developing new products is the only way out. In 2014, the 3D curved surface glass which he had long been developing successfully went into production, and immediately became the top pick of accessories of the world’s top smart phone brands. Biel Crystal is currently the only company in the world being capable of a mass production of 3D curved surface glass, which gradually becomes the major source of the company’s profit.

Biel Crystal has its branch offices in Shenzhen, Huizhou, Anhui and Inner Mongolia with 120,000 workers, manufacturing products like crystal glass, display screen cover glass, ITO touch panel, flat panel display and glass plate for micro-electronic devices. Mr Yeung persists in the idea of ‘People-oriented’ and adheres to the business principle of ‘Honesty, Diligence, Contribution and Progress’, comprehensively introducing global-advanced automated manufacturing and management system, employing local and overseas talents and adopting state-of-the-art technology and test standard. Mr Yeung is concerned with a safe and comfortable working environment and desirable staff dormitories and facilities for his workers and takes care of their recreation and entertainment as well as benefits. The built factories and dormitories exceed 1.7 million sq. ft., with dustproof, clean and central air-conditioned workshops; its recreational area includes staff garden, recreation building, children playground, a large-scaled library, and a counselling room providing workers with counselling service by professional psychological counselors.

As an industrialist Mr Yeung works pragmatically, revealing his perseverance which is the spirit of a typical Hong Kong industrialist. Though his factories are set up on the Mainland, Mr Yeung who was born in Hong Kong regards it as home and has his roots here. He believes that innovation can bring out transformation of times and hence advocates new technology development in Hong Kong that he donates HK$200 million to City University of Hong Kong to support its veterinary medicine research and student exchange programme. He also takes charge of various public officials and makes money and resources donation to the society. In July 2016, Mr Yeung was appointed as a Justice of the Peace by the Hong Kong SAR Government, proving his remarkable achievements.

Forward Winsome Industries Ltd (Fowind), which was established by Mr L T Lam in Hong Kong in 1960, produces a range of products including plastic toys, wireless remote control toys and dolls. As an original equipment manufacturer for many world-renowned toy companies, Fowind runs five factories in Foshan and Lianzhou in Guangdong Province with a total gross area of two million square feet.During peak production period, the company employed as many as 18,000 workers.

Born to a humble family in Hong Kong, Mr Lam’s childhood was not easy. After reaching adulthood, he established a few plastic factories with his own effort. He at first worked in a magazine office in Central to learn English, and was also a part-time agent and the commission he earned became the capital for starting his business. He later joined an industrial materials company. At that time plastic was a kind of novel material, and he suggested to his boss to set up a plastic processing factory to improve profitability. He was then promoted to the managerial level. In this connection, Winsome Plastics Works (Winsome) was set up.

Mr Lam later collaborated with his boss, colleagues and old schoolmates to set up Lee Man Plastic and Bakelite Manufactory Company (Lee Man) in Guangzhou in 1949. This was the first factory run by Mr Lam. In the same year, Mr Lam partnered with his friends to establish Advance Plastics Factory in Tai Kok Tsui. In the next five years, Mr Lam established Forward Products Company and Alice Doll Fashions Ltd to produce dolls and dolls clothing respectively.

In 1960, Winsome Plastics Works and Forward Products Company were merged as Forward Winsome Industries Ltd. The production lines were diversified. Several years later, Mr Lam established another factory in Taiwan, Forward Toys Factory, to follow some of the outward processing orders received by Fowind. The idea of promoting industries to save the country has not faded out. As Taiwan is Chinese land, he hopes to contribute to the development of industries there.

Having his roots in Mainland, Mr Lam returned there to contribute to the development of the country. In 1979, the early period of reform and opening-up of the Mainland, Mr Lam set up a factory in Dongguan despite oppositioin from his family. Initially the factory hired only 25 workers. He considered that light industries could be an economic driver as they drew capital, and brought production and management techniques, as well as employment opportunities.

The Federation of Hong Kong Industries (FHKI) established the “Sir Sik-nin Chau Foundation for Industrial Development” in 1960 in an aim to assist the FHKI to expand services and enhance industrial research capability. Nurture industrial talents and promote the development of Hong Kong Industries. Mr Lam was one of the intiators of the Fund. He believes that the development of new products relies very much on talents. Therefore, Fowind set up a research department in 2000 to enhance product development and material testing.

Although Mr Lam is now 91 years old, he is still concerned about the development of industries. Mr Lam was conferred with “Outstanding Achievement Award – Hong Kong Toy Industry” by the Toys Manufacturers’ Association of Hong Kong in 1997 and “Sixty Years of China’s Toys Industry – Special Honour Award” by China Toy Association in Beijing in 2010.

Being a successful entrepreneur, Mr Lam is always obliging. He has set up various scholarships and education funds since the Reform and Opening Up, to support deprived children in the Mainland to attend school. He also set up scholarship at Cornell University in the US, and he was a Board Member of the Institute of International Education to promote education overseas.  He also donated over RMB10 million to help his hometown on various projects, such as road construction, school libraries and swimming pools, and reconstruction of ancestral shrines, and to purchase expensive imported medical equipment for hospital.

When sharing his rules to success as a first-generation Hong Kong plastics manufacturer, he says, “Industrialists should never be afraid of difficulties, and should rise up to challenges with diligence, courage and wisdom.”

Dr Roy Chung was born in Macao. Due to some uncertainties in his hometown, Dr Chung decided to move to Hong Kong in 1960s before he graduated from secondary school. He worked diligently as a warehouse keeper in an electronics factory and continued his studies as well. He was soon promoted to warehouse manager. In 1985, Dr Chung co-founded, with his German partner Horst Julius Pudwill, Techtronic Industries Co Ltd (TTI) which produced rechargeable tools. Leveraging the various advantages of Hong Kong as a regional headquarters, including the proximity to the production base in the PRD and Hong Kong as an international financial centre, TTI has successfully pulled resources together to raise funds and acquire global brands in the past 30 years. It started as a small factory with a few workers, and has become a multi-national enterprise with over 20,000 employees worldwide. It is now the market leader which owns numerous global brands. Its turnover has grown from HK$500 million when it was listed in Hong Kong in 1990, to over HK$30 billion today. Hence Dr Chung has been crowned as “The King of Power Drills”.

He encourages continuing education and lifelong learning, and has completed two doctorate degrees in 2010 and 2012 respectively. Recognising the importance of education, Dr Chung is devoted to nurturing the new generation by assisting the development of Hong Kong higher education and training professionals for industry. He was Deputy Council Chairman of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Council Member of University of Warwick in the UK. Now being the Court Chairman of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Deputy Chairman of the Vocational Training Council, and Chairman of the Advisory Board for the Faculty of Business of Lingnan University, Dr Chung is committed to the strategic planning of higher education. He also cares for youth development in Hong Kong, and is Chairman of the Outward Bound Trust of Hong Kong and the Boys' & Girls' Club Association of Hong Kong, and Director of Hong Kong Paediatric Foundation of Hong Kong Paediatric Society. He also established the Bright Future Charitable Foundation that generously sponsors education institutions to support education and scientific research.

Dr Chung has actively participated in voluntary and public services, and is committed to advancing Hong Kong industries. He has led business delegations to various countries to explore industrial and technological collaborations in order to raise the standards of Hong Kong industries. He has served over 200 public bodies over the years. He was Chairman of the Federation of Hong Kong Industries, and is now a Member of the Trade and Industry Advisory Board of Commerce and Economic Development Bureau, and Economic Development Commission - Working group on Manufacturing Industries, Innovative Technology; Vice-Chairman of Hong Kong Design Centre; and Chairman of Innovation and Technology Advisory Committee of Hong Kong Trade Development Council.

Dr Chung’s achievements have been well recognised in the community. He was conferred with the Young Industrialists Awards of Hong Kong 1997 and appointed as Justice of Peace in 2005. He was also awarded an Honorary Doctorate Degree by the University of Newcastle in Australia in 2006, an Honorary Doctorate Degree of Business Administration by The Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2007, an Industrial Professorate by the University of Warwick in 2010, Bronze Bauhinia Star in 2011, and Outstanding Achievement Award by the Professional Validation Council of HK Industries in 2012.

Dr Chung’s motto is “Concentrate on your work and keep innovating. Do your best and rise to future challenges”, and his road to success is a typical example of a Hong Kong entrepreneur who builds his business from the ground up. He is a role model for Hong Kong industrialists.

Dr Chan Sui-kau, together with his brother, was engaged in the yarn business in Southern China and Hong Kong, and in 1949 established Yangtzekiang Garment which was listed in 1970. Sparing no effort in diversifying the operations, Dr Chan has managed to tap into textile and apparel procurement, manufacture, wholesale and retail, as well as other industries during the past half century. Yangtzekiang Garment, headquartered in Hong Kong, has set up branches and plants all around the world.

Dr Chan is dedicated to promoting the development of the textile and clothing industry. Back in the 1960s, Hong Kong textiles and clothing industry was in the shadow of quota restrictions. Dr Chan, together with representatives from major trade associations, lobbied the Government to introduce a fairer distribution of quotas, laying the cornerstone for the continuous growth of garment export. Appointed as a member of the Textiles Advisory Board in 1970s and 1980s, he joined many visits to the US and Europe to deliberate on bilateral agreements. In 1988, Dr Chan helped set up the Textile Council of Hong Kong to promote the interests of the textile and clothing industry and became its Founding Chairman. His endeavour reveals his dedication, pragmatism and caring, as well as his entrepreneurship.

Apart from education and training, Dr Chan is also enthusiastic towards community, social and charity work. Realising the importance of education, Dr Chan co-operated with other industry players to found the Clothing Industry Training Authority (CITA) in 1975. The two teaching buildings and the Clothing Technology Centre constructed by CITA have helped enhance management concepts and production technologies of the industry and thus competitiveness. He has also rendered support to the social, medical and educational services in both Hong Kong and the Mainland. He received an Honorary Doctoral Degree of Business Administration from PolyU, an Honorary Doctoral Degree of Social Sciences from CityU, an Honorary University Fellowship from HKU, an Honorary University Fellowship from HKBU and an Honorary Doctoral Degree of Social Sciences from HKUST. He was also appointed as a Court Member of the PolyU. Apart from recognition from academia, Dr Chan also served as a member of the eighth and ninth term of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and a member of the Selection Committee for selecting the first Chief Executive of the HKSAR. Kenneth Lo and his wife founded Crystal Group in 1970 and today their company is renowned worldwide as one of the top OEM/ODM multi-national fashion apparel manufacturers. With its headquarters in Hong Kong, Crystal has over 40,000 employees internationally with an annual production of 230 million pieces of casual wear.

Mr Lo is committed to promoting sustainable development in the industry. In 2008, he became one of the founding members of the Sustainable Fashion Business Consortium (SBFC), an alliance seeking to promote sustainable development throughout the fashion apparel supply chain. 

During the past five years, Crystal Group has received over 230 awards in various areas including environment protection, social responsibility and corporate citizenship. In 2010 and 2012, Crystal Group was presented with the Hong Kong Outstanding Corporate Citizen – Manufacturing, Gold Award and the First Outstanding CSR Enterprise Award. Mr Wong Tit Shing graduated from Hong Kong Technical College in 1967, and has been working in the toy industry for more than 40 years. In 1977 Mr Wong founded Jetta Co Ltd with his friends. Jetta is now a well-recognised toy manufacturer. In addition to toy production, with its ever developing technology in manufacturing, Jetta is now building complex and innovative electronic products and robotic companion pets. Jetta is also holder of many design patents. Under Mr Wong’s leadership and visionary management, Jetta has built a strong corporate culture of developing “human capital” and building teamwork. Today, Jetta is a very successful and respectable organization in terms of business performance, technological innovations and market horizon. In 2009, Jetta won the Hong Kong DHL/SCMP Enterprise Award.

Mr Wong’s commitment and contribution to the toy industry are demonstrated by his affiliations with key organizations in the industry. He is former chairman of Hong Kong Toys Council.  He is the first Chinese who took up the role of President of the International Council of Toy Industries. The ICTI CARE Process was set up during his presidency. He is now serving in the ICTI CARE Governance Board. Kenneth Ting has been the Managing Director of Kader Group since its inception in 1985, and is responsible for the overall policy and development of the Group. In July 2010, he was appointed Chairman of the Company. 

Mr Ting had been unyielding in his efforts to promote and develop the local industries (especially toys) as well as his own business. In addition, he serves in key positions on numerous public bodies within Hong Kong and the Mainland. Currently he is the Chairman of the Hong Kong Ethics Development Advisory Committee, ICAC, the President of HK Wuxi Trade Association Limited, the Honorary President of Federation of Hong Kong Industries, The Chinese Manufacturers' Association of Hong Kong, The Toys Manufacturers' Association of Hong Kong Limited, and Hong Kong Plastics Manufacturers' Association Limited.  He also serves as member of both The Hong Kong Polytechnic University Court and The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Court.  In the political realm, Mr Ting was elected as Member of the Legislative Council for two consecutive terms from 1998 to 2004.

Lee Man-tat was born in Macao in 1929; his family came from Xinhui of Jiangmen City in Guangdong Province. Married to Choi May-ling in 1954, Mr Lee has four sons and one daughter, all of whom work in the Lee Kum Kee Group.

In 1954, Mr Lee joined Lee Kum Kee to assist his father Lee Shiu-nan in managing the business. In assuming the role of Group Chairman in 1972, he resolutely built a renowned brand of ethnic Chinese enterprise, which marked a new chapter of this reputable enterprise.

With endurance and an innovative spirit, Mr Lee is a business leader with foresight. In the 1950s, Dr Tang Hsiang-chien moved from Jiangsu’s Wuxi to Hong Kong to build his textile empire. In 1968, he founded the Peninsula Knitters Ltd which has led the textile industry for the past decades. Recognising early on the economic potential of mainland China, he was a pioneer to invest in the Mainland during the late 1970s. He launched large-scale projects in Xinjiang and established the Xinjiang Tianshan Woollen Spinning and Knitting Co Ltd. Dr Tang also ran the first ever Hong Kong-Shanghai joint-venture corporation - Uni-Shanghai Wooltex Ltd. His entrepreneurship has become an example for Hong Kong industrialists to follow.

With success in the textile industry, Dr Tang expanded into electronics manufacturing. In 1985, he founded Meadville Group. At that time, Meadville operated the first hi-tech printed circuit board manufacturing business in Dongguan. Under Dr Tang’s leadership, Meadville's business expanded to Shanghai. With state-of the-art technology, Meadville was a top-tier printed circuit board manufacturer in the Mainland. To achieve technological breakthrough and enhance human resources, Dr Tang set up a training centre in Shanghai in 1999. Now, into his mid 80s, Dr Tang is still involved in the daily business of Meadville. In 2007, he led Meadville to list on the Main Board of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.

Dr Tang is dedicated to education and has donated generously to local and Mainland education. He also made remarkable contributions to the establishment of the Hong Kong Standard and Testing Centre. Moreover, he established the ‘Peninsula Education Foundation’ and ‘Tang Kwan-yuen Education Foundation’, the latter is named after his late father.

Dr Tang has devoted great efforts to serve the community; he has taken up many significant positions, such as Chairman of the Federation of Hong Kong Industries, Board Member of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, Chairman of the Hong Kong Cotton Spinners Association, Member of Consultative Committee for the Basic Law of HKSAR, Hong Kong Affairs Advisor to the Government of the PRC, Board Member of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Chairman of the New Asia College of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, member of Preparatory Committee & Selection Committee for HKSAR and Member of the Standing Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference. Dr Tang was conferred the Golden Bauhinia Star by the HKSAR Government in 1999 in recognition of his significant contributions to Hong Kong.

Dr Chiang Chen is the Founder and Chairman of Chen Hsong Holdings Ltd. Born in Shangdong Province, he came to Hong Kong in 1949. In 1958, Dr Chiang started his own business with limited capital. After half a century of endless effort, Dr Chiang has developed Chen Hsong from a small machinery shop to one of the largest manufacturers of injection moulding machines in the world, setting a successful model for Chinese among industry.

In 2005, Dr Chiang was awarded the Grand Bauhinia Medal by the HKSAR Government. He was awarded doctorate degrees in engineering, honoris causa by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 1990, in social science, honoris causa by the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1991, and in business administration, honoris causa by the Open University of Hong Kong in 1993. Dr Chiang is a former court member of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and The University of Hong Kong. He was the honourary Professor of the Shenzhen University. He is also the honourary Dean of the South China University of Technology, president of the Chiang Chen Industrial Institute in Shangdong, and honourary president of the Research Centre for Market-Economy of Beijing University.

Besides academic awards, Dr Chiang was appointed by various municipalities and government departments as a consultant and honourary citizen. For his contribution in promoting Hong Kong’s manufacturing industry, Queen Elizabeth II of the UK awarded Dr Chiang an OBE. All these awards are to honour Dr Chiang’s devotion and contribution in industry and society as well as his lifelong achievements.

Chen Hsong was established in 1958. The scale of business was limited at the start. However, through its relentless pursuit of technology enhancement, manufacturing innovation, non-compromising service level and a mind for excellence, Chen Hsong’s leading industry position was secured.

After some five decades of continuous hard work, Chen Hsong has grown to become one of the largest manufacturers of injection moulding machines in the world. Chen Hsong produces around 15,000 machines annually, with approximately one machine sold every 10 minutes. Chen Hsong is the only plastic injection moulding machine manufacturer of its kind that serves customers 24 hours a day, 365 days a year in after-sales and maintenance service in China. Dr Chiang has made much contribution to community service and education. He believes that in order for China to become a wealthy nation, it must have a good industrial foundation. To establish a good industrial foundation, China must widely promote industry by focusing on education and training.

The Chiang Chen Industrial Charity Foundation was established in 1990 by Dr Chiang Chen. His belief in Enriching the Livelihood of People by Industry, Strengthening the Country through a Prosperous Society was inspired by the quick recoveries of the Japanese and German economies after World War Two. Dr Chiang firmly believes that advanced manufacturing technologies will bring about China’s modernisation and boost living standards of all Chinese citizens. Dr Chiang therefore donated all his shares of the Chen Hsong Group to establish the Chiang Chen Industrial Charity Foundation.

The objectives of the Foundation are to encourage and support training activities in the area of industrialisation and economic development; to encourage and support activities for the improvement of mechanical manufacturing and production technology; and to encourage and support research and development activities in the area of new machine tools.

Through various activities and funding programmes, the Foundation expects to help train more industrial technologists and professional executives, thereby accelerating the technologies and research development of manufacturing industries in China.

Marjorie Yang is the Chairman and CEO of Esquel Group. She received a BSc in mathematics from MIT, and an MBA from Harvard Business School and returned to Hong Kong in 1978 when she helped establish Esquel. In 1995, Ms Yang became the chairman of Esquel.

Under her leadership, the company has adopted progressive management techniques. The dynamic, vertically integrated operations structure controls everything from cotton farming, spinning, weaving, knitting and garment making to packaging of the finished products, with production facilities in China, Malaysia, Vietnam, Mauritius, and Sri Lanka.

Esquel has risen to become a powerhouse in the textile industry in Asia and throughout the world. It has close to 47,000 employees and has a prestigious client list including Abercrombie & Fitch, Brooks Brothers, Hugo Boss, Next, Nordstrom, Polo Ralph Lauren, Nike and Tommy Hilfiger. The Group makes 60 million garments a year and generates revenues of US$500 million.

In 1999, Ms Yang s leadership was recognized when she received the DHL/SCMP Hong Kong Business - Owner-Operator Award. From 2000 to 2005, she has been highlighted in Fortune magazine's annual list of the 50 most powerful women in business.

Ms Yang is concerned with education, with a particular interest in the development of young managers. She has also been very involved with the MBA programs at Harvard Business School, MIT, Tsinghua, Fudan and Lingnan Universities, and sits on the various advisory boards of these institutions. Ms Yang is also committed to community and environmental issues. She has an immense interest in conserving environment and culture, especially in Xinjiang. She currently sits on the board of Conservation International.

Since 2003, Ms Yang is a Member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and Chairman of the Textile & Clothing Sector Committee of the China Association of Enterprises with Foreign Investment (CAEFI). Ms Yang also sits on the boards of prestigious corporations such as Swire Pacific Limited and the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited. She is a member of the MIT Corporation and the Court of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. In 2006, Ms Yang was appointed a member of the Greater Pearl River Delta Business Council. Since 1990, Victor Lo has been the Chairman and Chief Executive of Gold Peak Industries (Holdings) Limited, the holding company of an Asian multinational Group engaged in the manufacturing and marketing of batteries, electrical and electronics products. In the early 1970s, Mr Lo returned to Hong Kong after his university studies and joined the family business. Working with other family members, Mr Lo has successfully transformed Gold Peak from a family-run business into a multinational enterprise. He has set up an extensive manufacturing and distribution network in China that spans over 20 major cities. He has built up renowned household brand names such as “GP Batteries" and “CLIPSAL" “GP Batteries" is among the top three battery brands in China and it is also the world’s top ten battery manufacturer.

Apart from his achievements in the field, Mr Lo is devoted to public services. He actively takes part in various organisations that are crucial to the economic and industrial development of Hong Kong. He is a newly appointed non-official member of the Executive Council of the HKSAR. He is currently the Chairman of the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation, the Council Chairman of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, a member of the Steering Committee on Innovation and Technology, and the Greater Pearl River Delta Business Council. He is also the Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Hong Kong Design Centre and a member of the Exchange Fund Advisory Committee of Hong Kong Monetary Authority. He was appointed as one of the three Hong Kong representatives for the Business Advisory Council of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) from 1996 to 1999.

Mr Lo has contributed great efforts to strengthen the relationship and the networking between China and Hong Kong for the industry. He was the Chairman of the Federation of Hong Kong Industries from 2001 to 2003. During his term period, he set up the Pearl River Delta (PRD) Council to promote the interests of Hong Kong companies as well as to maintain cooperation and communication links between Hong Kong and Guangdong organisations. He initiated the ‘Made in PRD?research which provided extremely useful information for the Government and manufacturers of Hong Kong. Mr Lo is currently the Honorary President of the Federation.

Mr Lo’s contribution is well recognised in the community. He was awarded the Hong Kong Young Industrialist Award in 1989. He was appointed as a Justice of Peace (JP) in 1995 and an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1996. In 2001, Mr Lo was awarded the Gold Bauhinia Star (GBS) by the HKSAR Government for his dedication in promoting innovation and technology and for his distinguished community services.

Dr Allan Wong is the Chairman and Group Chief Executive Officer of VTech Holdings Limited. He co-founded the company in 1976 with the vision of "Innovation and Technology". Powered by the idea of putting technology into the hands of people, VTech has grown to become the largest supplier of corded and cordless telephones in North America and one of the world's leading suppliers of electronic learning products.

VTech began with a US$40,000 investment and a staff of 40 people in a small factory in Hong Kong. Seizing the opportunity presented by the invention of the microprocessor, Dr Wong and fellow entrepreneur Stephen Leung created the company's first electronic learning product in 1980, which was an instant success.

Dr Wong later leveraged VTech's technology into cordless telephones as well as contract manufacturing. Under his leadership, VTech moved early to establish manufacturing operations in Southern China and later to set up an R&D network centered on Hong Kong that combines technological know how with market understanding. Dr Wong also spearheaded the creation of a strong brand platform, including the AT&T and VTech brands, and an extensive distribution network in North America, Europe and Asia.

A technology enthusiast, Dr Wong has a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from the University of Hong Kong. He also holds a Master of Science degree in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Wisconsin and an honorary degree of Doctor of Technology from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

Dr Wong is the Chairman of the Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute and a member of the Council of Advisors on Innovation and Technology. He is also a council member of the University of Hong Kong, an independent non-executive director of the Bank of East Asia Ltd, China-Hongkong Photo Products Holdings Ltd and Li & Fung Ltd.

This wider contribution to Hong Kong has been given considerable recognition elsewhere. In October 2003, Dr Wong was awarded the Silver Bauhinia Star (SBS) from the Hong Kong SAR Government for his significant role in promoting Hong Kong's industrial and technological development, as well as promoting Hong Kong as a center of innovation and technology.

Under Dr Wong's leadership, VTech is now expanding into new markets such as Mainland China and Eastern Europe, and continuing to develop innovative products that address market demand. "Innovation and technology" will continue to provide VTech with new avenues of growth.

Dr Patrick Wang is the Chairman and CEO of Johnson Electric, a global leader in the design and manufacture of micromotors and integrated motor systems.  Dr Wang assumed leadership of the company in 1984, growing its annual revenue from US$37 million in that year to US$1 billion in 2003.  In addition to his visionary leadership of Johnson Electric, he is also an active educationalist and a committed advocate of Hong Kong industry.

Johnson Electric was founded in 1959 by Dr Wang Seng-liang and Mrs Wang Koo Yik-chun.  Since then, Johnson Electric has grown to be a leader in markets around the world, shipping 2.5 million motors every day to customers throughout the world for use in cars and other vehicles, power tools, home appliances, business equipment, personal products and audio-visual goods.From its beginnings in a Hong Kong factory, the Group’s principal manufacturing sites today are located in China with other production plants in Italy, Mexico and Thailand.  Johnson Electric has engineering centres in Hong Kong, USA, Italy, Japan, China and Germany.  It employs 32,000 people worldwide.

Dr Wang joined the Johnson Electric Group in 1972, after graduating from Purdue University with BSc and the MSc degrees in Electrical Engineering.  He became a Director of Johnson Electric in 1976, then Managing Director in 1984, when he listed the company on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.Dr Wang has driven many initiatives aimed at enabling the company to better meet the fast-changing demands posed by globalisation and the advent of new technologies. He led the establishment of worldwide R&D centers located in Italy, Germany, USA, China, Japan and Hong Kong.  These have given Johnson Electric a technical edge, and has led to the continued expansion of the applications served by Johnson Electric’s motors.

Dr Wang is also active in the business sector, as an unrelenting advocate of advancement and adherence to the highest principles of management. In the industrial sector, Mr Wang is honorary chairman of both the Hong Kong Critical Components Manufacturers Association and the Hong Kong Electrical Appliances Manufacturers Association.  He was formerly a director of the Provisional Hong Kong Science Park Company Limited.

Aside from industry, Dr Wang’s passion is education.  He is a council member of the Chinese University of Hong Kong as well as the University of Hong Kong.   He is also a director of the Southeast University in Nanjing, China.  He was previously a director of the University of Hong Kong Foundation for Educational Development and Research Limited.

Through his memberships and executive positions at various Hong Kong business and industry organizations, Dr Wang continuously contributes towards promoting Hong Kong as a world class business and industrial centre, particularly with regard to its unique access to China’s rapidly growing industrial base. Kenneth Fang, is Chairman of Fang Brothers Knitting Limited. Under his leadership, the company has successfully developed into one of the world’s largest apparel manufacturing companies. Mr Fang is committed to Hong Kong industry and has spent much time promoting the development of the textiles and garment industry. He is widely respected in the industrial sector.

Kenneth joined his family’s textile business in 1965. A year later he founded Fang Brothers Knitting Limited and started manufacturing high quality sweaters, T-shirts and jeans. Soon Kenneth, with his vision and foresight, started to introduce modern production and business formats into this traditional industry and employ vertical integration production practices. At present, the company operates 25 factories in Mainland China, Hong Kong, Thailand, Malaysia, Mexico, Honduras, the United States and the United Kingdom, employing over 25,000 workers. The group’s annual production is in excess of 30 million pieces of high quality knitwear. The group has also a successful retailing arm, possessing a number of world-renowned apparel labels, including Episode, Jessica, Colour Eighteen, and Pringle, which is one of the most respected sweater brands in the world with a 187-year history.

Dr Fang has served as a member of the Textiles Advisory Board since 1979. Over this time he has played a fundamental role in various negotiations with the United States and the European Union on textile and garment issues. During the 1980’s, Dr Fang led and successfully defended Hong Kong against a case raised by the US Department of Commerce on a US Anti-Dumping Duty Order Against MMF Sweaters from Hong Kong. In 1999, Dr Fang chaired the Textiles and Garment Industry Revitalisation Committee and proposed to the SAR Government a detailed plan comprising short, medium and long-term measures to strengthen Hong Kong’s position as a world fashion/design centre. Recently he has led the Textile Council of Hong Kong in proposing to the SAR Government the establishment of a Hong Kong Fashion and Design Centre.

Dr Fang has been chairman of the Hong Kong Productivity Council since 1994. Under his chairmanship, the Council provides consultancy and other professional services to meet the needs of the industrial and business sectors, helping them to enhance their productivity and competitiveness.
